2010: The Year Of The Grossest, Most Offensive, and Most Violent Horror Movies
73Every year, movie critics will decry a horror film as a senseless slasher or "torture porn." Many times, they'll be right. But 2010 was unique in having three separate films that pushed the boundaries of good taste and decorum further than nearly any films that preceded them. Not since the 70s have motion pictures managed to gross out and offend audiences to such a wide degree.
Although much of the horror genre has been derided as tasteless gore fests, it takes something truly perverse to get jaws wagging. For every fifty Friday the 13ths, there's one Audition that makes people stop and realize what movie violence really is.
So, what are these new Salos, the next generation's, the latest Cannibal Holocaust, the new millennium's Men Behind The Sun? Continue on to find out about 2010's grossest, most offensive horror films.
Antichrist
This Lars Van Trier film takes audiences to the most painful heights of love and hate, the depths of self-delusion, and shows just how quickly the familiar can curdle into something grotesque and unimaginably terrible. Starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg as a husband and wife who find themselves in a nightmarish version of what was once their life. While they make love one night, their child dies in a tragic accident.
Gainsbourg retreats into her research into witchcraft in the middle ages, leading her to believe that women are inherently evil. While the two work out their issues, Dafoe insists they recuperate in a secluded cabin. After being visited by three representations of abstract evil, showing themselves as dead or dying animals.
The cabin takes on an increasingly malevolent atmosphere as nature seems to turn against the outsiders. While staying, Dafoe discovers evidence that calls into questions his wife's mental health to dates prior to the death of their son. The wife's anti-women views spiral out of control and, to save those who feel like skipping the film any more anguish, there's plenty of genital mutilation to go around.
Antichrist is actually quite good, and Von Trier has created a beautiful film. It is, however, one of the most difficult films of the decade and there's no easy way to classify it. First time viewers who want to be able to understand the film without repeat viewings: think about the title.
The Human Centipede
Well, not a whole lot going on in this one. The Human Centipede is probably the singularly most disgusting film I've ever seen. Kudos to writer/director Tom Six for creating the best possible piece of trash he could. Everything about it is competent: the cinematography, the acting, the directing. The only problem is that it is a subject matter that shouldn't be seen. By anyone. Ever.
Long story short, it is a movie about a classic mad scientists. He likes to play in realms of science sane minds shun. This particular mad scientist is obsessed with creating a human centipede. How does he go about accomplishing this feat? Simple: he kidnaps three people, and surgically connects them to one another, mouth to anus. Food enters the mouth of the first one and travels through the all three segments of the body before exiting the "tail."
Yup. You read that right. The back portions of the "human centipede" have to live off of human waste. I can't argue with the result: it is revolting and horrifying. It certainly evokes some of the body horror of David Cronenberg films like The Fly and Altered States. The concept, however, is too exploitative and the metaphor (people should rise above their base instincts and live as humans not insects) is spelled out pretty plainly.
Really, there's not a lot going on for viewers looking for an intelligent film. For what is essentially a one note gross out film, you could do worse. But ask yourself, why even bother? I can promise you nothing you don't expect to happen from this very thin concept will happen. It is what it is. And what it is is mostly terrible.
A Serbian Film
Released in the US in 2010, A Serbian Film might be the grossest film put out since Salo: 120 Days of Sodom was released in the 70s. To be fair, I have not actually been able to see this one personally, but for once, I think I'll skip. The subject matter is actually too gross and offensive to accurately describe in this web space. Since The Human Centipede was just described in detail, that should give a fair idea how deep this particular rabbit hole goes.
The basic plot is that a retired male porn star is asked to come out of retirement to star in an erotic film directed by a respected "art film" director. Much like a heist film, this "one last job" is certain to spin wildly out of control. Unlike The Italian Job, this coming out of retirement involves a disturbingly high amount of sexual violence.
I have read a full synopsis of the film after it generated headlines after premiering at SXSW in Austin and decided it is not something I want to witness. It is equal parts Saw and Silence of the Lambs, with the more unseemly portions of 8MM added in. There is violence, often sexual, against women. Against children. Just about everything depraved possible will happen.
Does that make it a bad film? I'm not sure. It takes violence to levels film rarely goes. It is not made by a shameless hack looking to make a few bucks. But there are things people should not see. Much of that is presented in this film.
It is important to note that all of what is shown has actually occurred in Serbia and has largely been ignored by the Western media. The setting is changed from the streets of a country tearing at the seams and moved to the trappings of a horror film. For those who do wish to see this film, ask yourself: why do I care to learn more about these fictional atrocities happening in this film than to acknowledge the real horror that the people of Serbia were witness to?

Thanks for the reviews though I'm not sure I'll run out and get them.
I'll second that, suziecat7.
The Human Centipede sounds a laugh so I may give that one a go, maybe even Anti Christ, but that Serbian one probably not, unless it plays on tv for free one night!
Cheers for these little gems I would have missed if it weren't for reading your quick reviews.
WOW the Human Centipede is disgusting! I watched the trailer and even that made me sick to my stomach! It scares me to think about the people who come up with these ideas! Serious Issues! Movies like that Give Horror Movies a Bad name!

You have no brain.
You clearly do not understand basic human nature.
This hub was fantastic. Thank you for the heads up. I haven't seen any new gory / horror films. The last one was Silence of the Lambs, and I still cover my eyes on parts of the Exorcist (my husband's favorite Holloween faire).
As a lover of the Golden Age of Hollywood, therefore despising the use of so much visual stimulant on film to get a point across.
Most movie goers are not stupid and can grasp the point of a plot without being slapped in the face with repetative gore. Great writing, loved your verbiage.
Hahahaha, the human centipede appears to be the bastard in the horror genre, i would like to check out, a serbian film and antichrist, i gotta keep up with the foriegn films, thanks for posting...
I can't believe I am writing this, or defending this film, but I have seen all three of these and the Serbian Film is potentially the most affecting of the three, but not particularly the best. I am having a difficult putting this into words actually. AntiChrist was the best of the three. However, A Serbian Film was a very well done allegory, an incredibly powerful movie, that I wish I hadn't seen, if that makes sense. It has scenes in it that stain your soul, and man, I am not a religious guy. The movie stays with you though, in a way that few films do and I am not sure if that is because of the grotesque avenue of events it takes you through, or that horror that this rabbit hole is a reality in a place that you can accidentally end up on a train in Europe. I am not sure if I am posting to tell you that it is a brilliantly violent allegory that is remarkably done as it drags you by the foot down Dante's pit, or if I am trying to tell you not to, that it will burn its projection of pain onto you, inside. If you want a review of this film, take it as that...you will be feeling the very same thing 2 weeks after viewing it. It does that to you. If you can watch this and not feel immediately like you want to scrape its visions from your memory, then please tell me you don't live near me. But the images resign...and you begin reluctantly to see the brutal metaphors, so it lingers.
The Human Centipede sounds just plain wrong, lol. All of them sound pretty depraved. It's like not being able to resist looking at an accident as you drive by... but that doesn't mean I'm going looking for one.
It's funny how marketing or the right person who says something, crating a buzz-word fora film like, most violent, etc, and everyone buys into it? Okay, there will be a film coming out in about a week and I kid you not, this underground film which has been fly'n under the radar is gonna be truly listed as one of the most violent, gratuitous real grindhouse film in a loong time..
I went to a screening last year at the Down Town Independent theater in LA, for the screening of MUTILATION MILE. Well, no question it was a exploitation film, and I have been a fan of hard-core shit for a minute, but this movie is sooo fucking violent (there is a vagina scene in this film that I kid-you-not, I have never in my adult life seen anything like this in a movie). And these two actors were fucking awesome that played brothers in the film, that I can only describe as being out of their head in which I thought they were just that - two crazy dudes the director had cast until I saw the interview with the actors. Anywhoo, where was I… So, I guess it's about some true shit that happened about a big drug deal gone wrong (what drug deal doesn’t?). So, what brought me to this topic, was I was looking at the recent issue of Fangoria, and sure enough, the film is getting released this month. I've checked out the info online, and there is quite a buzz. So, the info I got was off of IMDB. I found a photo from another article online... Anyway, I can’t quite say it’s a horror film in the classic sense- more like a Martin Scorsese’s, Taxi Driver, kinda thing… F**k, I don’t know.. It was just violent has hell, well acted for a no-budget and a good story. -MW
Great wrap up of three controversial films of 2010!
I did catch 'Antichrist', which was indeed hard to watch, but yet hard to look away from. Such a visual, atmospheric hybrid-horror ride! As for 'The Human Centipede' and especially 'A Serbian Film', they sound more exploitative and grotesque without a real payoff/purpose in the plot.
Anyone who was interested in any of these would love the film 'Irreversible'. While containing extreme/disturbing scenes, including a NINE MINUTE rape scene, the difference for the ability for audiences to watch/enjoy the content was story. The film had a point in its storytelling and thus gave ample supporting/background scenes for the disturbing images it depicts.
I have only seen 'Antichrist' and I must admit I am glad I saw it. I rented on 'on demand' and wasn't beating myself up afterwards after spending the money on it. Most of the horrors made these days DO; indeed, make me wish I had not of bought/rented them after doing so. This one was worth the money in my opinion.
I had not thought about it but it was a pretty gory year for horror films.
Thanks for the warning on The Serbian. I love horror and was thinking of watching it, but, after reading your hub and the associated comments, I think I will pass seeing how I need to be able to sleep sometime this year.
Great hub!
Watch I spit on your grave. two words... fish hooks
I usally don't watch gory movies for the gores sake. I like my movies to have plot and some feeling. Hellraisor is very gory but it had an awesome plot. Saw is gory and the plot is a thin as old sink water.
Of your list, the only one I've seen was the Human Centipede, which I found to be both disturbing and entertaining. I look forward to checking out the other two.
Nice list.
I've only seen the trailer for "Human Centipede" and it seems a wee bit too "out there" for me.
As for "Serbian Film" I've read more than enough about it to know that I don't even want to be in the same room as a copy of the DVD. Yeesh!!
I'll stick to my slashers and carnivorous-creature horror flicks, I guess I'm just a wimp.
I've seen 'em all! I thought Anti-Christ was ok, the others not so much.
Yikes. Some of these films sound utterly disgusting. I admit that I like scary movies, but being scared and being sickened by gore are two entirely different things. Thanks for the thoughtful descriptions of these movies. Very useful.

Human centipede sounds cool and awful at the same time,i'll check it out.I have a problem with being able to tell what happens in a movie just by 1 preview or a synopsis and I'm right 95% of the time. Bonkok Dangerous is the only movie that through me for a loop in the past 10yrs.
